Cumberland Maryland, The Queen City Located in the mountains of Western Maryland near the borders of West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania, Cumberland is a short drive from Washington, DC (130 miles) and Pittsburgh, PA (100 miles). Cumberland was named after the son of King George II, the Duke of Cumberland and played a pivotal role in early American history as a strategic stronghold for Union troops during the Civil War and later a crossroad for all points west. During the 19th century Cumberland was a key road, railroad and canal junction and at one time was the second largest city in Maryland (second only to Baltimore). The surrounding hillsides provided coal, iron ore, and timber that helped supply the Industrial Revolution. In addition, the city was a major manufacturing center, with industries in glass, breweries, fabrics, tires and steel. However, following World War II, Cumberland began to lose much of its industrial importance and its population declined.
Today Cumberland is enjoying a renaissance but this time as a hub for tourism, outdoor activities, arts and a focus on it's historic past. Cumberland's quaint downtown, centered around Baltimore Street, is remarkably preserved as it looked in the early 20th century and revitalized with new art galleries, theatres, stores and restaurants. Outdoor enthusiasts won't be disappointed as Cumberland is a growing base camp for a new niche industry supporting the ever popular Great Allegany Passage bike trail connecting Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, DC.
